Schengen Border Update: The EU Entry/Exit System Is Now Fully Operational
Schengen Border Update: The EU Entry/Exit System Is Now Fully Operational
Travel update · Schengen Area · 2026
The European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at external Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. It digitally records the entry and exit of eligible non-EU nationals travelling for short stays, replacing manual passport stamping.
What should Ghanaian travellers expect?
For Ghanaian passport holders travelling to the Schengen Area for a short visit, the EES does not replace the need for a valid Schengen visa. At the external border, eligible travellers may have their passport details recorded and their facial image and fingerprints collected or verified. The system also records entry and exit dates.
Does a traveller apply for EES before departure?
No separate EES application is required in advance. Registration takes place at the external border. Travellers should allow time for border procedures, follow instructions from border officers and carry the documents relevant to their visit.
Roylux Travels & Tours can help clients organise their visit purpose, travel plan and supporting documentation before a Schengen visa application.
